Psychological Assessment

We undertake a thorough assessment appointment of a child/young person prior to offering any form of intervention/treatment. This assessment appointment takes approximately 1.5- 2 hours and involves meeting with the child/young person and their parents/carers. During this appointment we like to gather as full a developmental history as possible and an extensive attachment history for children who have been accommodated/adopted. We like to gather a sequential history and sometimes we might draw on other psychometric assessments when we feel this might enhance our understanding of the severity of the difficulty (e.g. Parenting Stress Index, Child Behaviour Checklist, Beck Youth depression Inventory). We will then offer a psychological formulation of the young persons difficulties and advise the parents/professionals regarding what would be the best treatment approach to address these difficulties.

We also offer psychological assessment to adults who are seeking psychological therapy. This appointment takes approximately 2 hours during which we will gather a full history of the current difficulties and other relevant details. Where relevant we might use some psychometric measures to help us to measure the severity or frequency of a difficulty for example: Depression, Anxiety, OCD. On completion of assessment we will develop a psychological formulation of the difficulties and a therapeutic action plan regarding the most beneficial intervention.

“Therapy has helped my daughter to reflect on her experiences & be heard & held when exploring difficult things. I do not think she would have got as far as she has in terms of insight into herself & her life without therapy.”

“This therapy has helped us to bond more closely and given us a focus in the week for reflection. The best thing about working with Wendy has been her willingness to engage with the school & other agencies to provide a unified approach for my daughter.”
