"Therapeutic work is a journey towards improving emotional and mental health and well being, and relief from psychological distress as we begin to feel truly understood in the context of our experiences in a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship".
At TFC we prefer to develop an understanding based on "what happened to you" rather than "what's wrong with you?". This takes the emphasis away from being problem and diagnosis focussed and helps everyone to see the difficulties in the context of a person's family history, their early development and life events. We feel it is important to begin our therapeutic journey by completing a thorough psychological assessment. This can provide us to get a good understanding of the difficulties and how these may have developed. A psychological assessment also enables us to understand the difficulties in the context of a young person's history and then to support them by offering the most appropriate therapeutic treatment and support.
The assessment process is vital in helping us to fully understand the difficulties, enabling us to make sense of early childhood and life experiences, losses and traumatic events as well as looking at the family history and wider social and psychological influences. We like to gain a full understanding of emotional, psychological and cognitive difficulties, as well as looking at individual's strengths and resources.
Our bespoke assessment process allows us to develop a shared understanding of the difficulties, using simple language and providing recommendations for therapeutic interventions. (See Therapy section for further information) for individuals and families to address the issues. We believe it is important for us to begin to develop a trusting therapeutic relationship through the assessment process as we begin to develop an understanding of the difficulties through the lens of experience.

"Children are not blank slates for which the past can be rubbed out, but human beings who carry their previous experiences with them and whose behaviour in the present has been profoundly affected by what has gone before". John Bowlby, 1951.
“Therapy has helped my daughter to reflect on her experiences & be heard & held when exploring difficult things. I do not think she would have got as far as she has in terms of insight into herself & her life without therapy.”
“This therapy has helped us to bond more closely and given us a focus in the week for reflection. The best thing about working with Wendy has been her willingness to engage with the school & other agencies to provide a unified approach for my daughter.”
