Staff working with children and families with complex needs are at risk of staff burnout and compassion fatigue. These workshops are designed to support staff to focus on the emotional impact their work can have on their own well being and ability to offer compassion focused care. We support staff to develop good self care and reflective practice skills to build resilience.

The Foundations Consultancy (TFC) offer either one off and/or ongoing psychological consultation sessions to staff supporting children and young people with complex needs to understand the child and the behaviours they are presenting with.
We can provide clinical supervision and reflective practice to facilitate the space to reflect on the difficulties being experienced by staff in supporting or working with children and young people with complex needs. This time can enable staff to make sense of the issues using an attachment and trauma informed understanding and a psychological formulation to guide successful engagement and relationships with the child.
Regular consultations with staff can enable a staff team to adopt a more psychologically informed approach, thereby ensuring the child has the most optimal chance of being understood in the context of their history and developing emotionally through a relational and therapeutically informed approach. Staff can bring their concerns that they have in managing the child/young person and develop a psychological formulation/understanding of the difficulties with advice and practical support regarding how best to respond to and manage these challenges.
These consultations can ensure that staff have an opportunity to reflect on their own emotional needs, this can prevent staff burn out and ensure that the young people’s difficulties are being given thorough clinical consideration.
Consultation is most successful when a team have been given the training offered by the Foundations Consultancy on attachment difficulties, therapeutic re-parenting and managing psychological difficulties in the looked after child.
"Wendy supports our residential care staff teams on a monthly basis and her insight, knowledge and understanding of attachment, trauma and children with complex needs has been invaluable. Our staff look forward to having time with her each month and it has helped them to really embed their knowledge of the PACE approach that we adopt as an organisation since Wendy has trained all of our staff. Wendy is warm and personable and is valued by our teams." Amy Watson, Hatch LTD, 2024
We offer Supervision and Reflective practice sessions to staff teams and/or Individuals to enable them to reflect on their work. Supervision using a psychological framework can support the development of therapeutically informed practice and also supports professionals to think about the emotional impact of their work on their psychological well being.
Reflective practice can enhance our skills and enable us valuable time to think about what we are doing and whether what we are doing is effective and helpful. It is vital to emotional well being to ensure that professionals working with trauma have a space to talk about the impact their work is having upon them. Reflective practice enables us to develop professionally and personally.
